SQL Server Analysis Services

Microsoft SQL Server 2005 Analysis Services (SSAS) is a layer that sits between the end user and the underlying data repository; it allows you to create a model that contains much of your business rules separate to the data database. SSAS works with the leading database vendors such as Teradata, Oracle, as well as Microsoft’s own SQL Server.

SSAS delivers online analytical processing (OLAP) and data mining functionality for business intelligence applications. Analysis Services supports OLAP by letting you design, create, and manage multidimensional structures that contain data aggregated from other data sources, such as relational databases. SSAS supports both MOLAP and ROLAP and even a combination of the 2, which can be configured for your needs, e.g. if you have huge volumes of data in a Teradata database you are likely to opt for the ROLAP or hybrid option. For data mining applications, Analysis Services lets you design, create, and visualize data mining models that are constructed from other data sources by using a wide variety of industry-standard data mining algorithms.
