Battery directive

The battery directive (2006/66/EC) establish rules regarding placing batteries and accumulators on the market and a prohibition on placing batteries and accumulators on the market containing hazardous substances. It also establishes specific rules for the collection, treatment, recycling and disposal of waste batteries and accumulators.

Affected are all kinds of portable, automotive and industrial batteries or accumulators, regardless of their shape, volume, weight, material composition or use. Prohibited are all batteries, accumulators and button cells that contain more than 0,0005 % of mercury by weight, more then 0,004 % of lead by weight and more than 0,002 % of cadmium by weight, except button cells with a mercury content of no more than 2 % by weight.

The obligations of the "producers" for the concerned batteries and accumulators are:

  • Registration with the local authorities
  • Join collection scheme and financing the recovery of batteries.
  • Reporting of sales to authorities.
  • Marking batteries with crossed-out wheelie-bin and chemical sign
  • Information to end-users and disposal companies

Pb Cd HgUsed batteries and accumulators are marked with a crossed-out-wheelie bin and are strictly forbidden to discard within the household waste. The end-user has to discard the used batteries and accumulators at the sales point or the local collection scheme to make sure they are professionally recycled or disposed of. Batteries and accumulators potentially contain hazardous substances,  posing a risk for health and the environment. The chemical signs bellow the crossed-out-wheelie bin stand for Pb = lead, Cd = cadmium and Hg = mercury.
