What is Remote Management?

Geographically dispersed networking is continuing to grow, with 27% of all businesses and an estimated 97% of large enterprises having branch offices (IDC) that require constant access to the same information and systems available at head office. In order to be effective and competitive in the global arena, its not just branch offices that are creating this growth, but remote facilities and even people just on the other side of the corporate campus that require the same level of connectivity. The result is a dispersed network environment with widely distributed IT assets that poses greater management and maintenance challenges for IT departments to ensure network uptime. Remote infrastructure management equipment has developed to enable organisations to access and manage servers and IT equipment remotely over the Internet.

An effective tool for remotely managing servers regardless of their physical location is KVM over IP, which provides secure remote keyboard, video, mouse control of servers over an IP network. With BIOS (basic input/output system) level access, system administrators can monitor and respond to server issues from virtually anywhere over an Internet connection. A KVM switch allows a single keyboard, video display monitor and mouse to be switched to interact with any of a number of computers at once, as opposed to having a single person interact with a number of computers one at a time. KVM switches are commonly used at Web and other server locations with multiple computers but are managed usually by a single administrator or Webmaster. The switch provides more table space in addition to saving the cost of multiple keyboards and monitors.

Console servers (console access server, console management server, serial concentrator, or serial console server) are equipped with a number of serial ports ranging from 0 to 48 providing access to the system consoles of connected devices. Console servers can be accessed over a serial link such as a modem, or over a network with terminal emulator software such as Telnet or SSH. Providing IT managers with the ability to securely access and manage many pieces of IT equipment including; servers, switches, routers, telecoms equipment, heating, cooling, building access controls and UPS’s. Advanced console servers provide enterprise features including; SSL and SSH for data encryption, remote authentication, and firewall technology to reject connection attempts or block ports.

Terminal servers, also known as Device servers, are designed to remotely access and manage serial interface edge devices such as; medical equipment, kiosks, POS/retail terminals, barcode scanners, weighing scales, security equipment and door entry panels.
