Demand for digital storage in the home has been driven by a constant expansion in personal content, stored on increasing numbers of entertainment products at ever increasing content resolution.
Indeed over the next few years personal storage requirements are forecast to expand more rapidly then commercial requirements.

Look around your own home and you will discover hard disk drive storage devices in PC's and laptops, games consoles, PVR's, set top boxes and flat screeen TV's, MP3 players, digital still and video cameras and in car navigation systems. With our ever increasing demand for and capabilities of recording images, music, films, games and navigation information, at ever increasing resolution quality, the home digital revolution has seen an explosion in demand for storage through hard disk drives, both in the initial appliance and then through a back-up system.

The requirement for more digital storage capacity in the home is being driven by increasing digital resolution in both cameras themselves, digital video recording devices and integrated convergent devices such as mobile phones.
20,000 still digital images at 4 megapixels requires 20GB of storage capacity. The same volume of images at 8 megapixels, 40GB. Even newer mobile phones have integrated 8 megapixel cameras, with popular digital cameras having 12 megapixels.

Changes to the way we experience our entertainment in the home mean that we can now directly record television programmes or films and watch them on demand, increasingly in high definition digital formats through cable and satellite channels. We are able to download programmes, films and music directly to our PC's where they can be stored for viewing on demand, transferred to other portable devices such as mobile phones or MP3 players and backed-up to portable or stand-alone external disk drives. Increasingly home entertainment is stored on a shared Network Storage device for upload on demand over wireless home devices and over the internet through shared content access to any PC or laptop in the home or even on a TV connected to the home network via a digital media extender.

Manufacturers are increasing expanding our ability to store movies in standard and high-definition formats with products now enabling up to an additional 120 hours of high-definition TV or 600 hours of standard-definition TV to be recorded via some DVR's in the home onto 1TB DVR expanders.

The design of hard drives is now driven by the way the consumer will use the storage and those features deemed most important to the end customer such as data integrity, power consumption, system architecture and interface and specialized design will continue as new markets discover ways to take advantage of the capabilities and value of hard drives.

The explosion in home content, the way we manage and store it, share it and back it up, all contribute to the rapid increase in home digital storage needs and the development of new technologies to encompass those needs.
