Helping you find the correct virtualisation solution

  • Why are thin client solutions becoming more popular?
  • Is it possible to mix technologies within a virtualisation solution?

A convergence of issues from data security to employee flexibility, and power consumption to management costs, are loosening the grip of the fat client PC as the device of choice as the enterprise desktop.

Thin client solutions have been around for some time and have been widely adopted, but have never been truly accepted as a general purpose enterprise desktop. Recently VMware, with the backing of the major systems vendors, have been getting success and industry acceptance for the VDI solution, which delivers XP desktops from dedicated virtual machines in the data centre, to thin client devices.

However, there is more to virtualisation than just the hypervisor and the VDI solution may not always be the most appropriate solution. Windows Terminal services, which is a form of virtualisation at the operating system (OS) level and solutions such as App-V from Microsoft and Symantec SEV, which virtualise applications within the desktop, can be used to deliver a similar level of experience and ease of management, but at a lower cost per desktop than VDI.

Organisations need to select the client device and the desktop hosting solution that best suits their needs and their goals. The big advantage of true virtualisation is that you can easily mix technologies. For example a Sun Ray ultra thin client, consuming only four watts of power, can deliver a remote XP or Vista desktop from a dedicated virtual machine or a regular office workers Terminal Services desktop, simply by inserting the relevant worker’s smart card. Either worker can pick up their live desktop, with open documents, from another thin client or at home over broadband, if the organisation allows it.
