Options & Roadmaps for Oracle customers

In response to Oracle’s announcement to discontinue all software development on the Intel Itanium microprocessor, HP has confirmed its plans to continue the development and innovation of Itanium-based Integrity NonStop and Integrity server platforms with HP-UX and OpenVMS operating systems for more than 10 years. Recognising that unplanned change to product roadmaps is disruptive to customers in maintaining the stability and continuity required for mission-critical environments, HP and Intel have re-affirmed their commitment to Oracle customers who have invested in HP Integrity servers as their platform of choice.

HP’s current plan is to support Poulson-based Integrity server platforms through at least 2021. With a planned release of Kittson-based Integrity servers somewhere in mid-2015, EOL dates are beyond 2021.  Despite Oracle’s claim to the contrary, Intel also remain firmly committed to Itanium:

“Intel’s work on Intel Itanium processors and platforms continues unabated with multiple generations of chips currently in development and on schedule,” said Paul Otellini, president and CEO of Intel Corporation “We remain firmly committed to delivering a competitive, multi-generational roadmap for HP-UX and other operating system customers that run the Itanium architecture.” Poulson is Intel’s next generation 32nm 8 core based Itanium chip, and is on track to more than double the performance of the existing Tukwila architecture. Kittson is an officially committed roadmap product for Itanium beyond Poulson and is also in active development.

Alternative Solutions

For customers looking to change the database architecture in their HP-UX environment, there are a number of alternatives to the Oracle database:

Customers running SAP on HP-UX with Oracle

Customers using Oracle exclusively for enterprise data warehouse or real-time analytics

Customers requiring upgrade to Oracle database 12g

HP’s Converged Infrastructure for Oracle environments

Whilst Itanium can easily stand up to and compete with any processor in the market, it’s important to remind customers that the solutions they invest in are about far more than chips, with the cost of ownership and overall ROI being the key considerations.  HP’s Converged Infrastructure approach provides the stability, flexibility and low cost of ownership for mission-critical environments that no other vendor can match.

HP is the only vendor that can deliver:

  • one common, modular application platform
  • one common way to connect networks
  • one common, comprehensive way to optimise energy usage
  • one common, comprehensive console to control and manage the infrastructure.

This is a major differentiator for customers who are looking to deploy a blended environment of UNIX and x86 in their data centres.

  • Unified blade architecture from x86 to Superdome enables customers to simplify their mission-critical environments by consolidating applications on a common platform
  • HP FlexFabric enables customers to flexibly scale resources to any workload
  • Always-on resiliency, with 100+ innovations to ensure global business continuity
  • Matrix operating environment instantly adjusts infrastructure to meet business demands
