The Solution & Technology Approach

HP GlancePlus PAK

Primarily positioned for individual HP BCS (UNIX) systems, HP GlancePlus PAK software arms customers with powerful system performance monitoring and diagnostic capabilities. It enables them to easily examine system activities, identify and resolve performance bottlenecks, and tune their system for more efficient operation.

HP GlancePlus PAK software is a combination of two products - HP Performance Agent and GlancePlus. While HP GlancePlus software provides immediate performance information about a system, HP Performance Agent software collects and logs a subset of this information for historical data analysis. It lets customers easily examine system activities, identify and resolve performance bottlenecks and tune their system for more efficient operation. With HP GlancePlus PAK, customers save time, improve user productivity and enable business applications to run more smoothly.

Key Features:

  • View summaries of real-time overview data and drill down to diagnostic details at system-level, application-level and process-level views of system performance
  • Collect and log performance metrics for historical data analysis
  • Tailor system performance rules to identify problems and bottlenecks via rules-based diagnostics
  • Set up alarms based on any combination of metrics and execute commands or scripts for automated actions
  • Display real-time system performance and alarms from GlancePlus graphically while it runs as an icon
  • Perform logfile management through configurable class logging, file size and rollover day and time
  • Use local extract and export utilities to read and back up logged data.

This bundle of complementary products provides an ideal solution to manage the availability and performance of a single system.

HP SiteScope

Primarily positioned for run-rate or security sensitive servers, or where customer requires a more complete view of their distributed IT infrastructure.  Covers HP ISS (Windows or Linux) or BCS (UNIX) systems.

HP SiteScope is an agentless monitoring solution that ensures the availability and performance of distributed IT infrastructures – including servers, operating systems, network devices, network services, applications, and application components. This proactive, web-based solution is lightweight, highly customisable, and doesn’t require installation or maintenance of high-overhead agents on production systems.

Key Features:

  • Features an agentless, customer-ready architecture that lowers TCO
  • Monitors more than 75 different target types for critical health and performance characteristics; enables proactive alerts before end users experience problems, with customisable thresholds
  • Offers solution templates that feature built-in domain expertise in the form of specialised monitors, default metrics, proactive tests and best practices for a given application or monitoring component
  • Can initiate automated corrective actions such as restarting servers, clearing disk space, and executing commands
  • Generates daily, weekly, and monthly summaries of single and multiple monitor readings with built-in management server-based reports
  • Provides powerful administrative functions, such as global search and replace, copy/paste, and filter views
  • Provides a highly customisable, web-based user interface that supports role-based views and displays favourites
  • Serves as an integrated component of HP Operations Center and the monitoring foundation for HP Business Availability Center and HP LoadRunner
  • Monitors Windows, UNIX, and Linux systems, offering comprehensive coverage for the most heterogeneous environments
  • Includes flexible notification methods, including standard methods—e-mail, SNMP trap, and pager (including support for SMS devices)—and additional methods, such as post and database alerts. In addition, it has the ability to escalate an alert according to rules defined by the user
  • HP Operations Manager can deliver a combined agentless and agent-based monitoring solution to deliver the breadth and depth required
  • Rapidly update monitoring and deployment across the entire enterprise using templates and xml
  • Reduce false alerts, customise allowable deviations, and establish separate thresholds to address usage based on demand or the time of day, using baseline management.

HP Operations Manager

Primarily positioned for mission-critical servers or where customers require more intensive information gathering for a more complete view of their distributed IT infrastructure – including servers, operating systems network services, databases and other applications.  Covers HP ISS (Windows or Linux) or BCS (UNIX) systems.
Operations Manager provides comprehensive event management for IT infrastructure, operating systems and applications - consolidating events to a  single operations console.  It also delivers proactive performance monitoring and automated alerting.

Key Features

  • Receive, consolidate, and integrate events from HP agent and agentless technologies as well as third-party tools - such as network monitors - to provide a single, normalised view of the managed environment
  • Automatically discover managed nodes, applications infrastructure, and automatically deploy monitoring rules (policies) to managed nodes based on their application role for simplified, consolidated management
  • Create and synchronise trouble tickets (incidents) in industry-leading help-desk packages to integrate with IT service processes
  • Add resolution guidance information to events to advise operators on a recommended approach for remediation, and include pre-defined tools and automated or guided actions to streamline fix processes
  • Give IT staff production-ready features such as operational maintenance modes; support for high-availability cluster architectures and disaster tolerant distributed environments using multiple HP Operations Manager servers; the ability to forward events to external notification systems such as paging, email, or SMS; and the ability to audit and log operator activities to effectively and efficiently manage mission-critical environments.

Agent Based vs Agentless

Push agentless when:

  • Customer quickly needs to bring monitoring on line to check something out
  • Users are not demanding high end data, just the basic event and performance data
  • Requirement is to provide a solid foundation for event and performance management
  • Customer only needs a few metrics and doesn’t have to collect at a high frequency volume.

Push agents when:

  • Customer can’t access the credentials for every system they are responsible for monitoring
  • They require additional level of detail and to be able to do event correlation and root cause analysis to isolate problems
  • Need in-depth metrics to facilitate root cause drill down
  • Want to know which process or which application is consuming system resources and causing the problem
  • Users are not only monitoring but responsible for triaging system performance problems
  • When an agentless-based approach is not exposing the problem.

Avnet Insight Operations Appliance

Primarily positioned for SMB customers who are price sensitive and wish to monitor run-rate and / or mission-critical servers for a single view of the complete distributed IT infrastructure – including servers, operating systems network services, databases and other applications.  Covers HP ISS (Windows or Linux) or BCS (UNIX) systems.

Insight Operations Appliance is an integrated solution, including pre-configured hardware, software and services. Designed to provide advanced, enterprise class monitoring of both physical and virtual infrastructures, the Appliance features network, server and application management through a single pane of glass.

Aimed at SMEs looking to leverage full value from their server virtualisation activity and challenge the 70-80% of IT budget spent keeping the lights on, the Insight Operations Appliance contributes significant savings to IT Infrastructure Management and enables enterprise growth models.

A bundled solution, the appliance is priced for SMEs costing less than 50% of the equivalent separate hardware, software and services, whilst also being much faster to implement – reducing internal resource requirements.

Insight Operations Appliance is also ideal for organisations struggling with multiple infrastructure management tools. It’s also a great fit for those searching for ways to reduce their costs whilst increasing efficiency and service to their customers.

  • Delivers an integrated network, server and application management solution through a single pane of glass
