The cost of IT failure is huge – accounting for $6.2 trillion every year, with small and midsize businesses (SMBs) experiencing an average of nearly 140 hours of downtime annually. This can equate to 55% lost revenue and 45% lost productivity. The question for SMBs today is how best to balance budget and resources in an effort to meet business demands? Driving key technology initiatives such as virtualisation can have a significant, positive impact. However, they also bring about their own set of challenges and frequently result in higher operational costs, as SMBs try to manage complex IT environments through disparate, legacy management tools.
Gartner and IDC both predict large growth in virtualisation and as this market matures and more critical production applications are deployed virtually, the need to optimise IT infrastructures and ensure effective system management becomes increasingly vital.
In fact, Gartner predicts that by 2015, tools and automation will eliminate 25 percent of labour hours associated with IT services. Cloud computing will also hasten the use of tools and automation in IT services – improving productivity and lowering costs. Some basic work functions and related jobs will be reduced in scope, or just disappear. This means that IT services firms will need to invest in developing automation, as those that lack the intellectual or financial capital to do so will be relegated to commodity staff augmentation status.
