What’s new:
Better Protection:
- Automated Feedback Loop – Streamlined Probe Network participation allows customers to provide local real-time threat intelligence back to Symantec, improving antispam effectiveness tailored to the customer’s environment.
- Real Time Updates – New streaming architecture allows Brightmail Gateway to download antispam rule micro updates as frequently as every second, to better defend against new threats and improve overall effectiveness.
- Improved Defences Against Targeted Attacks – A new antispam module applies machine learning to better target distributed low volume attacks such as 419 spam (scams) and phishing attacks.
- Support for DKIM – Symantec Brightmail Gateway can sign and verify Domain Key Identified Mail (DKIM), allowing companies to protect their email domain against abuse by spammers.
Greater Control:
- Symantec Content Encryption – A new premium add-on service to Symantec Brightmail Gateway, Symantec Content Encryption enables enterprise-class email encryption by levering a hosted service that adds no new infrastructure to a customer's environment.
- Improved Incident Management – Configurable incident folder management reduces the effort spent managing quarantined compliance and data loss prevention incidents, including the ability to automate remediation options.
Improved Manageability:
- Streamlined LDAP Integration – New LDAP integration architecture improves support for recipient validation, authentication, address resolution, and email routing based on a company’s LDAP infrastructure, simplifying deployment and adding new capabilities.
- Support for SMTP Authentication – SMTP Authentication allows mail clients to authenticate and connect directly to Symantec Brightmail Gateway without connecting to a groupware server.
- Expanded VMware Support – Symantec Brightmail Gateway Virtual Edition supports deployment on VMware vSphere 4.0, VMware’s latest generation platform for optimizing IT service delivery, high availability, and responsiveness.
- Robust Spam Quarantine Architecture – New Spam Quarantine architecture leverages high-speed disk access to improve performance and increase quarantine scalability.
Upgrade Path:
Upgrade and free-of-charge upgrade
Based on Brightmail Gateway’s annual software and services subscription model, there is a very simple upgrade path.
All customers who have purchased earlier versions of the product and have current subscriptions will have access to the new software. The product’s administrative console includes an integrated update function that clearly indicates when new software versions are available and automates the updating process.
Current Brightmail Gateway customers will need to upgrade to Brightmail Gateway 8.0.3 before upgrading to Symantec Brightmail Gateway 9.0 and all future releases. Customers running Brightmail Gateway 8.0.3 have the ability to upgrade to the new software on a staggered release schedule starting on 10, March 2010. New customers who receive appliances with Brightmail Gateway 8.0.3 will be offered the upgrade to Brightmail Gateway 9.0 during installation
Note: Brightmail Gateway 8.0.3 is required in order to upgrade to Brightmail Gateway 9.0. Customers running earlier versions of Brightmail Gateway or Mail Security 8300, must first upgrade to 8.0.3, then to 9.0. New LDAP integration architecture in Brightmail Gateway 9.0 also requires network connectivity from all Brightmail Gateway Scanners to LDAP servers. This may require network configuration changes for some customers.
Crossgrade:
Brightmail Gateway is an upsell/replacement sale for current Mail Security for SMTP customers or enterprise Brightmail Message Filter customers (formerly Brightmail AntiSpam) that are interested in the additional features and functionality of the Brightmail Gateway. There are no special cross-grade SKUs, the standard Brightmail Gateway 9.0 SKUs may be used for crossgrades.
