The Solution
Symantec is well known for its award-winning backup and de-duplication solution, NetBackup 7, which is used by thousands of organisations to simplify and cut the cost of data protection throughout the enterprise. NetBackup appliances compound the benefits of NetBackup 7 by providing turnkey backup and de-duplication solutions in an easy-to-deploy form factor. The appliances enable efficient, storage-optimised data protection for the data centre, remote office and virtual environments.
Two NetBackup appliance series are available:
Symantec NetBackup™ 5220 Appliance
The NetBackup 5220 Appliance is an all-in-one backup solution that enables easy deployment or expansion of NetBackup environments, while reducing the overall backup storage footprint with a built-in de-duplication option.
- Turn-key backup solution: greatly reduces on-site prep, test, implementation and system administration – all from one single vendor
- Content-aware de-duplication: up to 50x less storage and 99% less bandwidth
- Expandable storage: starts at 4TB and scales up to 36TB
- Simplified licensing: pay once for de-duplication and replicate across devices
- Easier operations: Symantec controls hardware / software patching
- Modular design: simplify remote office, virtual infrastructure and data centre backup.
Symantec NetBackup™ 5020 Appliances
The NetBackup 5020 Appliance is an end-to-end de-duplication solution for the enterprise. It comes pre-packaged with NetBackup de-duplication software on enterprise-grade hardware, and provides NetBackup or Symantec Backup Exec™ customers with the features required to protect their critical data while bringing down storage and bandwidth requirements.
- NetBackup integration: integration with NetBackup and NetBackup 5200 series appliances for scalable, load-balanced, disk-backup for the data centre
- Turnkey NetBackup De-duplication solution: greatly reduces on-site prep, test, implementation and system administration – all from one single vendor
- Only Symantec offers both source & target de-duplication on an appliance
- Content-aware de-duplication: up to 50x less storage and 99% less bandwidth
- Expandable Storage: 16TB up to 192TB of usable de-duplicated storage. Protect petabytes of data in one deployment
- Simplified Licensing: pay once for de-duplication and replicate across devices
- Improved Network Connectivity, with Fast 8Gb Fibre Channel port options.
The Benefits
These backup and de-duplication appliances eliminate the need to buy, load, test, manage, integrate, and support separate hardware and software from multiple vendors. Now organisations can simply install a NetBackup appliance and have a backup solution with built-in deduplication up and running in a matter of minutes.
Simplicity:
- Be up and running in less than 20 minutes
- Arrive with all necessary hardware and software components pre-installed
- Optimised for performance
- Multi-site backup operations from a single, intuitive, web-based console
- Monitoring of key hardware components, such as the disks, memory, power supplies and fans.
Completeness:
- Hardware, software, and support are all managed by Symantec
- No need to unbox, load, install, test, manage, and support multiple solution elements
- No need to integrate with other solutions from other suppliers
- Both source and target deduplication are provided by one integrated solution.
Performance and scalability:
- Extremely high backup performance via unique multi-dimensional scalability
- Performance can be scaled to run tens of thousands of backup jobs per day
- NetBackup deduplication architecture scales out at multiple levels
- Performance can also be increased by distributing deduplication processing to multiple media servers and/or to clients.
Flexibility:
- Fully integrated with existing NetBackup environments, so no complex or disruptive migration process and no time-consuming retraining effort required
- Support both source-based and target-based de-duplication, and in-line or post-process de-duplication
- Can be deployed in a wide range of use cases, as described earlier
- Support all major operating systems and applications natively, so they can accommodate multiple data types and sources.
Cost Efficiency:
- Lower operational costs, as day-to-day monitoring of backup operations requires minimal administrator intervention
- Immediate CapEx savings by allowing customers to consolidate backup and de-duplication solutions into one platform and delay or avoid additional hardware purchases. They deliver both immediate and long-term OpEx savings by unburdening administrators via centralised management
- Front-end, capacity-based licensing model (buy it once, use it forever) for the software portion of the appliance significantly reduces the total cost of ownership as compared to other hardware-based de-duplication solutions
- Strategic cost advantages, such as better backup service levels result in less data loss; reliability improves as there is no longer any need to cut corners on the disaster recovery strategy; the appliances improve the organisation’s ability to meet service-level agreements.
