New Symantec Products - August 2011

Symantec can help keep your customer's enterprise up, running, and growing no matter what happens - Symantec is branding this as Information Integrity. This includes solutions such as email security and availability, resilient infrastructure, regulatory compliance and online fraud management.

Available from 1st August 2011

Symantec is announcing Symantec Enterprise Vault™ 10.0, this new version will replace Symantec Enterprise Vault™ 9.0.  Symantec Enterprise Vault™ is an archiving platform that bridges the gap between business, legal and IT by adding intelligence to the way organisations store, manage, and discover unstructured information across email systems, file server environments, instant messaging platforms, and content management and collaborative systems. As the industry’s most widely deployed archiving solution, Enterprise Vault can reduce the cost of storing unstructured information by up to 60 percent. Because not all data is created equal and not all information should be kept forever, Enterprise Vault classification and retention technologies bring context and relevance to information, helping organisations enforce policies and protect corporate assets while enabling a repeatable and defensible discovery process.

Whats new:

Information Intelligence:

Data Classification Services (DCS) - Data Classification Services (DCS) analyses Exchange email content and metadata to help determine the archiving and retention strategy for that message. Classification tags may also be assigned to flag the message to be reviewed within Enterprise Vault Compliance Accelerator. These tags are also searchable and can be used as filters within Enterprise Vault Discovery Accelerator.

  • Adds context and relevance to corporate information and enables customers to automate decisions based on the value of the information
  • DCS policies become a searchable facet in Discovery Accelerator and Compliance Accelerator, speeding up the search and review process
  • Customers have more granular control and flexibility over the identification, retention, and deletion of information
  • Data privacy concerns are appeased with the ability to identify and flag email with private and sensitive information, such as social security numbers, bank accounts, and phone numbers and can be excluded from data sets that are exported to third parties.
  • Based on proven Symantec technology – can leverage previously created Symantec DLP policies to help speed deployment and ensure classification consistency with information management and data loss prevention.

Custodian-Based Searches - Discovery Accelerator users can now run searches based on content for a single custodian or set of custodians (A custodian is someone who’s been identified as having potentially relevant information to a case)

  • Improves search performance by narrowing the scope of the search to only those custodian archives relevant to the case. Added flexibility in the way searches are accomplished. (i.e. quickly find all information across email, SharePoint, files, IMs, etc. based on custodian.)
  • Target searches to a single custodian or subset of custodians within a larger group normally included within a case for increased search precision and recall.

Information Governance:

Social Media Archiving - Archive corporate social content such as Twitter, Facebook and LinkedIn and even capture entire web sites with Enterprise Vault and integrated partners such as Hanzo and Socialware.

  • Ensure compliance with FINRA 10-06 and other regulations regarding social media
  • Archive and discover social content along with email, SharePoint, file system and other information
  • Captured content and associated metadata and links are included in search and eDiscovery requests.

Collection from SharePoint Wikis and Blogs -  Enterprise Vault Discovery Collector can now collect from Microsoft SharePoint social media sites such as Wikis, Blogs, and Lists.

  • Enterprise Vault can archive SharePoint document, slide, and picture libraries. With EV 10, customers can now collect conversations and information from SharePoint Wikis, Blogs, and Lists for comprehensive eDiscovery.

Information Infrastructure:

Faster Search and Increased Performance - Introduction of new 64-bit indexing engine allows customers to take advantage of both scale-up (more memory) and scale-out (additional hardware) architectures. New archived content will be stored in 64-bit index volumes, seamless access to existing 32-bit indexes aids upgrades.

  • The new index engine improves scalability, adds flexible configuration options, and improves search for end users and Discovery Accelerator
  • Provides end-user transparency and seamless access to legacy indexes; searches will be federated between 32-bit and 64-bit index volumes automatically, meaning no forced index upgrades
  • Enhanced index management tools help guide upgrades to 64-bit indexes while maintaining health in normal operation

Symantec N8300 Support - Enterprise Vault 10 is integrated with the latest version of Symantec’s N8300 NAS platform.

  • Enables customers to store archived information to a Symantec FileStore software appliance and N8300 series hardware appliance
  • N8300 Data Archive & Retention (DAR) functionality creates a WORM-compatible volume
  • Support for Fujitsu UDS 3000 and Xiotech ISE NAS.

File System Archiving FilterPoint - Symantec Technology Enabled Program (STEP) partners can build filters that integrate with Enterprise Vault File System Archiving.

  • File System Archiving customers can deploy filters to enable advanced archiving decisions to be made based on the content of the file, not just meta-data.  Examples of use cases include Optical Character recognition ( i.e. faxes or scanned documents).

Collection from SharePoint Wikis and Blogs - Enterprise Vault Discovery Collector can now collect from Microsoft SharePoint social media sites such as Wikis, Blogs, and Lists.

  • Mac users will have an Enterprise Vault client for Microsoft Outlook 2011 for Mac. This Enterprise Vault 10 client will offer seamless access to archived mail and help eliminate the need for mailbox quotas.

Key Features:

  • Unified Archiving Platform: Moves less-frequently accessed information off of expensive primary storage and servers such as Microsoft Exchange and SharePoint, IBM Lotus Domino, file servers and more to lower-tiered storage
  • Global Deduplication: Efficiently archives information by storing just one copy of a file or message, regardless of the number of times it occurs or where it is stored, significantly lowering the long term total cost of ownership by reducing the archive size
  • Flexible .PST and .NSF Migration: Automatically locates and migrates existing .PST and .NSF files into the archive, helping you regain control of the information contained within those files. Centralised control of .PST and .NSF files helps accelerate eDiscovery while reducing storage costs, backup windows and information risk
  • Intuitive Electronic Discovery With Guided Review: Provides advanced search, legal hold and analysis including guided review, conversation threading, bulk marking and tagging. Relevant items are easily preserved on legal hold and provided to the requesting party though a flexible and auditable export process to simplify production
  • Seamless End User Experience: Enterprise Vault is designed to be a seamless extension to users’ existing tools (Outlook, Notes, SharePoint, etc.) giving visible access to archived information anytime, anywhere -including on mobile devices
  • Active Content Collection: Extends search, indexing and classification of data beyond the Enterprise Vault archive, giving organisations clear visibility and control in the discovery, assessment, and management of unstructured and semi-structured information
  • Data Classification Services: Analyses Microsoft Exchange e-mail content and metadata to help determine the archiving and retention strategy for that message. Classification tags may also be assigned to flag the message for supervisory review within Enterprise Vault Compliance Accelerator. These tags are also searchable and can be used as filters within Enterprise Vault Discovery Accelerator
  • Simplified  Installation and Administration: Provides administrators with wizards and dashboards filled with best practices to get Enterprise Vault up and running in minutes with easy day-to-day management
  • Faster search and improved performance: Improves productivity for end users, system administrators, and legal teams running eDiscovery searches. The new 64-bit index engine improves scalability and adds flexible configuration options, allowing customers to take advantage of both scale-up and scale-out architecture.

Upgrade Information:

  • Upgrades are supported from Enterprise Vault 9.0 servers and their service packs, only. Customers running earlier versions of Enterprise Vault must upgrade to version 9.0 before upgrading to Enterprise Vault 10.0
  • Free of Charge: Upgrades to Enterprise Vault 10.0 will be offered at no charge where maintenance is valid.

Marketing Description:

Symantec Enterprise Vault™ is an archiving platform that bridges the gap between business, legal and IT requirements by adding intelligence to the way organisations store, manage, and discover unstructured information from sources such as email systems, file server environments, instant messaging platforms, social media communications, and Microsoft SharePoint®. As the industry’s most widely deployed archiving solution, Enterprise Vault bridges technology and policies to bring efficiency and process alignment across IT, legal, and business needs. Organisations looking to reduce storage and FTE costs can have confidence in their decision to archive on premise, hosted, or to the cloud.

According to Gartner, approximately 70 percent of data is duplicate and hasn't been accessed in over 90 days. So why store it on top-tier storage? Intelligent information management can cut the cost of storing unstructured information by up to 60 percent and reduce backup windows by up to 65 percent. Not only are efficiencies felt in the data center around storage optimisation, performance, and improved backups, but end-user productivity can also improve. Mailbox quotas can be eliminated and personal archives and files on network drives can be archived and made accessible to end users while keeping the user experience intact.

Because not all information should be kept forever, Enterprise Vault classification and retention technologies bring context and relevance to information, helping organisations enforce policies and protect corporate assets while enabling a repeatable and defensible discovery process.

The time for intelligent information management is now; without it, storage costs spiral, information becomes harder to find, and legal, compliance and regulatory risks escalate.

End of life information:

Symantec Enterprise Vault™ Automatic Classification Engine (ACE)
Due to changes in the market, Symantec has decided to discontinue the Symantec Enterprise Vault™ Automatic Classification Engine (ACE) . The Automatic Classification Engine discontinuation represents part of Symantec’s evolving strategic direction for the Intelligent Archiving platform. Symantec is announcing Symantec™ Traffic Shaper 6.1. This new version will replace Symantec Brightmail™ Traffic Shaper 6.0.
The Symantec™ Traffic Shaper powered by Brightmail™, formerly Symantec Brightmail™ Traffic Shaper, controls spam volume before it enters the network while ensuring the continuous flow of legitimate mail. This significantly reduces administrative overhead, network bottlenecks, and reduces mail infrastructure costs.

What’s new:

  • Support for IPv6
  • Notification enhancements and Supportability improvements.

Key Features:

  • Reduces up to 80% of spam volume before it impacts the network and email infrastructure, while ensuring the continuous flow of legitimate mail
  • Shapes traffic at the TCP protocol level by assigning resources to good senders and reducing the quality of service (QoS) available to spammers. This causes mail to back up on the spammers' servers without having to block legitimate incoming mail
  • Easy to install, compatible with any messaging server, and operates transparently in the network.

Upgrade Information:

All customers with current licenses of Symantec Brightmail Traffic Shaper 6.0 are entitled to upgrade to Symantec™ Traffic Shaper 6.1.

Marketing Description:

Symantec™ Traffic Shaper powered by Brightmail™ reduces spam volume up to 80% by stopping spam before it reaches the network. It significantly increases bandwidth availability for legitimate email and reduces infrastructure and operation costs. Symantec offers the only appliance that shapes traffic at the TCP protocol level by prohibiting spammers from forcing mail into a protected network. This causes mail to back up on the spammers’ servers so that their infrastructure rather than yours incurs the burden of spam. Coupled with any antispam gateway solution, including Symantec™ Messaging Gateway and Symantec™ Message Filter, it gives Service Providers a comprehensive multi‐layered approach to combat spam that is easy to deploy and manage.

Available from 1st August 2011

Symantec is re-announcing Symantec™ Web Gateway 5.0. This new version will replace Symantec™ Web Gateway 4.5. Symantec™ Web Gateway 5.0 is an innovative web security appliance that protects organisations against Web 2.0 threats, including malicious URLs, spyware, botnets, viruses, and malware, and controls Web and application use.

What’s new:

  • Symantec Insight Anti-Malware Engine: Leveraging the Symantec Global Intelligence Network, Symantec Web Gateway 5.0 determines the reputation of files being transferred over the web, detecting and blocking zero-day and targeted threats before any security vendor is able to create a signature for those files. This capability dramatically extends Symantec Web Gateway’s ability to protect customer networks

  • Symantec DLP Integration: Symantec Web Gateway 5.0 can act as an HTTP/HTTPS (including decrypted SSL streams) enforcement point for Symantec DLP Network Prevent for Web. Along with Symantec Messaging Gateway, this allows customers to deploy a fully Symantec created, branded, and supported solution for Gateway DLP
  • Virtual Edition for Production Deployments: Symantec Web Gateway 5.0 can be deployed in VMware ESX/ESXi 4.x environments. This supports customers who prefer virtual appliances rather than the Symantec 8400 series appliances.

Key Features:

  • Does not require re-routing of network traffic to deploy
  • Can deploy off of a port Span or Tap
  • Provides a simple, intuitive Web-based GUI
  • Reporting and GUI software and databases are preinstalled and preconfigured on the appliance

Scale and Performance

  • Does not introduce more than 2ms of delay to a packet it is scanning
  • Can handle more traffic per appliance than the competition (up to 1Gbps)
  • More layers of scanning can be done per packet than competitive solutions

Depth of Coverage

  • Multi-layer approach to Web traffic examines all ports and protocols
  • Bi-directional scanning and inspection
  • Mix of inspection techniques: reputation, blacklisting, heuristics, definitions, behavioral analysis, network fingerprinting

Consolidated Policy and Reporting Engine

  • Single Reporting interface for all Web related activity
  • Able to track infections by type, severity, name, and category
  • Single policy can be created for all types of Web access controls: malware, applications, and URLs.

Upgrade Information:

Based on Web Gateway’s annual software and services subscription model, there is a very simple upgrade path. All customers who have purchased earlier versions of the Symantec Web Gateway product, and have current subscriptions, have access to Symantec Web Gateway 5.0. New customers who receive appliances with a previous version of Web Gateway will be offered the upgrade to Web Gateway 5.0.

Marketing Description:

Symantec™ Web Gateway 5.0 is an innovative Web security gateway appliance that protects organisations against Web 2.0 threats, including malicious URLs, spyware, botnets, viruses, and other types of malware, and provides controls over Web and application use. Symantec™ Web Gateway seamlessly integrates with other technologies within a customer’s environment to allow for simple installation and deployment in any size organisation.
