Symantec™ Messaging Gateway

Symantec Messaging Gateway delivers inbound and outbound messaging security, with effective and accurate antispam and antivirus protection, advanced content filtering, data loss prevention, and email encryption. It catches more than 99% of spam with less than one in a million false positives, leveraging real-time automatic updates, global and local IP reputation analysis, and comprehensive reporting to deliver cost-effective protection against new messaging threats.

What’s New

New Verdicts: New configurable verdicts for unwanted email categories allow customers to create policies for specific policy groups that can take actions on marketing mail, newsletters, and email with suspicious URLs.

  • Enhanced Spam Scanning: Updates to the Brightmail Antispam Engine allow better scanning of text-based attachments for spam and malicious URLs.
  • Match Logging: Enhanced message audit logs capture matching policy, text, and message part for content filtering policies.
  • TLS Logging: Enhanced message audit logs track TLS delivery status, allowing confirmation of TLS delivery for auditing.
  • Enhanced Integration with Symantec Protection Center: Symantec Protection Center centralises management and aggregates security data from multiple products, making this data available in a dashboard and cross-product reports. This provides a more complete view of security posture than any single product dashboard or report.
  • Software Update: An improved software update process within the Control Center UI allows for staging of updates and rich logs and update status. Note that this enhancement will impact updates subsequent to the 9.5 release.
  • DRAC Support: Expanded support for Integrated Dell Remote Access Controller functionality in the Symantec 8360 and 8380 hardware appliances allows customers to remotely monitor and manage their hardware environment.
  • More Flexible Backup & Restore: The restore process has been enhanced to allow a backup to be restored to a new host while preserving network configuration, enabling easier appliance migration and disaster recovery.
  • DNS Validation: Customers can configure a new reject action for connections based on failure of DNS validation via reverse DNS look-up.

Upgrade Information

Based on Messaging Gateway’s annual software and services subscription model, there is a very simple upgrade path. All customers who have purchased earlier versions of the Symantec Brightmail Gateway product and have current subscriptions have access to Symantec Messaging Gateway 9.5. The product’s administrative console includes an integrated update function that clearly indicates when new software versions are available and automates the updating process.

Current Brightmail Gateway customers will need to upgrade to Brightmail Gateway 8.0.3 before upgrading to Symantec Messaging Gateway 9.5 and all future releases. Customers running Brightmail Gateway 8.0.3 or ensuing releases have the ability to upgrade to the new software on a staggered release schedule starting in March 2011.

New customers who receive appliances with Brightmail Gateway 8.0.3 or 9.0.x will be offered the upgrade to Messaging Gateway 9.5 during installation.

Crossgrade Information

Messaging Gateway is an upsell/replacement sale for current Mail Security for SMTP customers or enterprise Symantec Brightmail Message Filter (formerly Brightmail AntiSpam) customers that are interested in the additional features and functionality of the Messaging Gateway. There are no special crossgrade SKUs, the standard Messaging Gateway 9.5 SKUs may be used for crossgrades.
