NEW - Symantec™ FileStore - Available from 7th February 2011
Symantec is announcing Symantec™ FileStore 5.6. This new version will replace the previous version of FileStore known as Veritas Storage Foundation™ Scalable File Server 5.5. FileStore is a clustered Network Attached Storage (NAS) product that provides NFS/CIFS/FTP/HTTP file services in a highly available and scalable environment. The soft appliance can be installed on industry standard hardware to give IT organisations flexibility in choice of hardware vendors.

Key Features
Symantec FileStore is a fixed function clustered NAS soft appliance. The solution provides a highly available and scalable NFS/CIFS/FTP/HTTP file serving platform with a simplified “appliance like” admin model. The applications consuming the storage are running a standard NFS, CIFS or FTP client. The components of Symantec FileStore include the SuSE SLES 10 operating system, Storage Foundation Cluster File System, and the new FileStore components on a single DVD image. Key features include:

Licensing Information
The product licensing will be based on existing per CPU meter - No core restrictions- Standard Edition changes from 2 CPU bundle license to per CPU with 2 CPU maximum
- Allows for single-node FileStore configurations (A new feature, Data Archive and Replication (DAR), will be licensed separately with 5.6)
- Applies to both FileStore Standard and Enterprise Editions
- Pricing meter for DAR will be based on capacity based pricing model (per TB) (The product editions associated with FileStore remain unchanged)
- Standard Edition limited to 2 CPUs in either a single node, or two node FileStore cluster
- Replication continues to be licensed separately.
Upgrade Path:
Free of charge: Existing Veritas Storage Foundation™ Scalable File Server 5.5 customers with active maintenance are eligible to upgrade. However, please note, the new Data Archive and Replication feature in 5.6 will require separate payment.
- Crossgrade: There will also be a cross-grade SKU available to allow customers to upgrade from the Standard Edition to the Enterprise Edition of FileStore 5.6
- Crossgrade from single CPU Standard Edition per CPU to per CPU Enterprise Edition.
