Symantec is announcing Veritas™ Dynamic Multi-Pathing 5.1. Veritas Dynamic Multi-Pathing (DMP) is a storage multi-pathing solution that provides maximum availability and performance in large heterogeneous SANs. As such, DMP allows users to confidently standardize on storage multi-pathing solution and take full advantage of the agility that results from no longer being locked in to a single storage hardware vendor.
Key Features:
This is the first release of Veritas Dynamic Multi-Pathing (DMP) as a standalone product. Previously, DMP has been a feature of Veritas Storage Foundation. This included Storage Foundation 5.1. This product allows customers to be able to use DMP without having to install Storage Foundation. This version of DMP supports volume managers and file systems other than Veritas Volume Manager (VxVM) and Veritas File System (VxFS).
DMP provides the following benefits:
- Storage Connectivity Virtualization
o By fully virtualizing connectivity from the host to storage, DMP increases data center agility. A storage administrator benefits by being able to choose the type of storage hardware that best suits his/her needs, knowing that the multi-pathing driver on the hosts either already support that storage hardware or can easily be enhanced to support it.
- Data Availability
o If an I/O path to a multi-path storage subsystem fails, DMP automatically re-routes I/O requests to an alternate path transparently without administrator intervention. When a failed path returns to service, DMP also restores the original path configuration, automatically and transparently.
- Optimized I/O Performance
o For storage subsystems that support simultaneous access to a single storage device on multiple paths, DMP enhances I/O performance by distributing I/O requests across all available paths according to pre-defined load balancing policies.
- Reduced Complexity and Increased Efficiency
o All DMP paths in a data center can be centrally managed and monitored from Veritas Operations Manager (VOM).

Veritas™ Dynamic Multi-Pathing (DMP) provides improved storage I/O performance and availability across heterogeneous server and storage infrastructures. DMP has intelligent algorithms to load-balance storage I/Os across multiple host bus adapters (HBAs) for faster throughput. It also increases an application's availability by rerouting I/Os to an available data path in the event of a storage path failure. Additionally, multi-host DMP management for firmware upgrades and path management can be centrally managed with the Veritas™ Operations Manager (VOM). The improved load-balancing and management capabilities enhance an administrator's productivity, improve overall storage performance, and reduce application downtime.
